WHAT IS COACHING? Executive coaching is officially a subset of management consulting, with a twist. Coaching: Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help clients: Produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives Improve their performance Enhance the quality of their lives
Coaches: Listen, observe and customize their approach to individual client needs Seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client Believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful Facilitate the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has.
How does coaching differ from traditional consulting?
In traditional consulting, the consultant is considered the subject matter expert. The consultant comes in at the request of the most senior executive, does an assessment, makes recommendations, and generally leaves without seeing changes implemented. In coaching, the client is the subject matter expert. The client singularly knows the most about their own issues, goals, dreams, and obstacles. The coach is a facilitator and change agent, assisting the client in developing and implementing their vision, long term, and short term goals. The coach is there for the client each week over an extended period, helping the client through the change process. How is coaching different from therapy? In therapy, the therapist helps the client to focus on the past and work through past issues. In coaching, the coach and the client focus on the future. What does an Executive Wellness Coach bring to the table? Skills: Facilitator for process and structure of approach Excellent listening, questioning, sensing, probing skills Expert at human behavior stages of change Knowledge of wellness Source of significant resources for client External source of accountability (the corporation does not get involved in the details of the executive’s wellness)
Confidentiality: Understanding of: Experience – from: Personal experience as an executive (preferable), and/or Significant consultant experience working with executives, and/or Extensive executive wellness coach experience
